family! Who'd have em?
Aug. 15th, 2004 08:21 pmIt's been a frustrating evening. My family were supposed to be here "late afternoon to early evening", which suggest to me around 5-7. Accordingly, I prepared to cook a ridiculous amount of food, to be ready by six. I made rolls of beef topside, wrapped around peppercorns and onion chunks, roasted onions, potatoes, carrots and parsnip, and was ready for roast mushrooms, boiled cabbage and broccoli.
Then at about quarter to eight I got told they werent coming.
I've got to admit, I made three mistakes. Firstly, I should have covered the meat right from the start, secondly I should have had the oven on lower, and thirdly I should have expected them about half eight. That way when I ended up eating it alone, at least my meat wouldn't have been dry.
Anyway, I'm hoping that leaving it soaking in wine all night and then gently heating tomorrow will leave me something juicy enough to eat. I have no good plans for the chopped veg, but the roasties shouldn't be a problem, as they can just sit in the oven until I or some hungry housemate picks them off.
Next time the family say they're coming round, it's takeaway and they're buying.
